Christ on the Mount of Olives Op. 85 Urtext based on the new Complete Edition soloists, mixed choir and orchestra
In the case of the oratorio Christ on the Mount of Olives, Breitkopf & Härtel can make amends with Beethoven after more than two centuries. As house composer at the Theater an der Wien, Beethoven had the opportunity to perform an oratorio there during the Passion season in 1803. Within a very short time he had designed his first and only work of this genre. The premiere took place on April 5, 1803 as part of an academy concert, in which Beethoven's 2nd Symphony and his 3rd Piano Concerto were also heard in public for the first time. The original edition of the score was not published until October 1811. However, Breitkopf & Härtel, the publisher of the first edition, apparently disliked Franz Xaver Huber's operatic libretto so much that the publisher had the texts edited on its own after the premiere. Beethoven fought back and demanded corrections, but in vain: the printed version went out into the world unchanged and the work has been distributed in this text form to this day. The Urtext new edition by Anja Mühlenweg corrects the intervention and presents the work with the Ur text. “The piano reduction is easy to play in its somewhat simplified form and, thanks to the numerous instrument details, always enables an accurate sound image.” (Ulrich Barthel, Neue Chorzeit) “All in all, a practical edition of Beethoven's Passion Oratorio, which will certainly not fail in a fascinating performance.” (Württemberg sheets for church music)
